In the beautiful glow of the Appalachian Mountains, a mule is born. His name is Raul. Now, it is more than seven years later (1963) and Raul is living in Montgomery, AL. In this hot spot of the civil rights movement, he is prepared to go to school no matter what people say. Through the pain and pressure of standing up for his rights, Raul will make life-saving allies, and deadly enemies. Then, everything changes when his closest friend Benny is kidnapped. Can Raul save his friend, stand up for himself, and still get an education...or will he fail, set back the actions of his predecessors, endanger himself, and the ones closest to him? Read Bravemule The Incredibly True Story of Raul, the Coolest Mule in School Who Stood Up to Segregation, to find out.

Bravemule The Incredibly True Story of Raul the Coolest Mule In School Who Stood Up to Segregation Bennet Geis Henry Chamberlin 9781312251922 Books

What started as an idea in the seventh grade for two students, turned into a magical fictional journey of a mule. A reader knowing that the authors were so young may have created a dismissive attitude toward such a heavy topic as segregation. What the reader will quickly realize is that the storytelling and well laid out chapters provide lessons in understanding, and more importantly taking action. The message goes beyond tolerance. It teaches us that we can all be brave--and that we must be brave. The Civil Rights history was told in a poignant manner that reminds us how important this message is in today's world. I applaud the two young authors for sharing a story that will resonate with many. - Thomas B. Dowd III, author of "The Transformation of a Doubting Thomas: Growing from a Cynic to a Professional in the Corporate World"

Bravemule The Incredibly True Story of Raul the Coolest Mule In School Who Stood Up to Segregation Bennet Geis Henry Chamberlin 9781312251922 Books Reviews

Bravemule,by two middle school guys, had me laughing from the start. "...the woman possessed...an expression like she had just tasted dog dung with lemon juice," and later, "...a smile like poisoned honey." Bravemule has lots of action, word choices that swing and kick, messages (to be tolerant, don't bully).back stories, parallel plots, parodies of songs, and a touch of romance. In other words, these guys have mastered intuitively a bagful of tools to create this humorous tale. Drawings and paste-ups by Bennet add to the adventure.
Libraries should stock this book for entertainment and inspiration for aspiring writers.
